When to change my aquarium lights to blue(night) white(day) or off?
I bought a aquarium and the hood of it comes with white LEDs which are like day time, blue LEDs for night and dark lighting and i can turn them off completely, i was wondering when to use each one and if i should turn all lights off at night or if i should leave the blue ones on. Thank you
The usual practice is to leave the blue LEDs on 24/7. This substitutes for the light in nature that would be supplied at night by moonlight and starlight. Total darkness, except in caves and very deep water, is rare in nature. Blue is the wavelength that penetrates deepest in water, so after a dozen feet or so, the underwater light has a blue cast. The white LEDs should come on at a time of day when is is already daylight and stay on for eight to nine hours. Waiting until daylight begins to fill the room the tank is in reduces the shock to the fish of being suddenly socked in the eyes with all the wattage in the world. It usually works out with the timing we would like to view the tank, during the evening so that it's on when we are home.
Because morning and evening light hit the water at an extreme angle, they refract off and don't enter the water, leaving the fish and plants in relative darkness for a while until the sun is high enough in the sky. Researchers have found that aquatic plants have adapted to 8 - 9 hours of illumination a day, and this would be true of fish as well. Terrestrial plants and animals have adapted to an average of 12 hours of light, but underwater it really is a different world.
