What does three and single phase mean? (for electricians) see details.?
I am having to hook my water well/pump back into a power supply.I don't know if the pump will plug into the temporary pole that FEMA brought with the trailer. I don't know what single phase....three phase means. Can a good electrician or someone who is knowledgable simplify what they mean
Typically, homes only have single phase power, capable of supplying either 120 volts AC or 240 volts AC to their homes. (This has two ungrounded or "hot" conductors, a neutral, and a ground.)
Industry uses three phase power. This uses three ungrounded (hot) conductors, and possibly a neutral, in addition to the ground wire (4 or 5 possible wires). In addition, the voltage is different, typically 480 volt, but you may see 208 volt also.
Even if the source is clearly marked, I would check the power with an AC voltmeter (or a Digital Multi-Meter available for about $40-100.) I would then verify that the pump motor is suited for the supply voltage by looking at the name plate on the motor itself.
Single phase is not comatible with 3 phase power. Usually single phase motors have a capactior mounted to the motor to assist with starting and running torque. Three phase motors need no capacitor. In addition, the physical wiring of the motor is different.
This is difficult for me to answer without being there. I would recommend finding an electrician to insure the installation is possible and done correctly.
