water chiller for aquarium?
I'm getting bit's and pieces of stuff to put together a planted aquarium and one piece I'm thinking about getting is a water chiller. In the summer our apt. get's really hot and the small tank my room mate has is always up around 84-85. But one thing I wonder is if water chillers generally have a turn off feature where if the temperature of the water reaches a certain degree then it will shut itself off. Also thinking about winter as well when the apt is cooler would it make sense to have a temptronic heater set at say 76 or 78 and then have a chiller running too in case the heat goes above that due to lighting or just ambient room temperature.
thanks.
if you currently use a chiller could you share which one you are using. there are some on ebay but I don't want to buy a dud
the tank is going to be a geosystems 80 which is a 32 gallon tank with a dual florescent canopy and the filter will be a fluval 205 external. just as an example the temperature in my room right now is 86
chillers are meant really for larger tanks. How big is your tank what kinda of lighting do you use? if you have metal halides that dont keep the balast under the tank and keep a fan on the ballast. to get a chiller for little tanks is almost always overkill. your better off buying a window ac unit and you and the aquarium will benefit in the summer and always just use a heater to maintain the water temp. i was looking into getting a chiller for my 36 gal reef tank but i found it wasnt worth it. you may also use fans across the water surface to help cool the tank or float bottles of ice. ive even seen people use icepacks around the filter if you have an external filter to help cool water in the summer. hope this helps and good luck with the tank.
Addition; depending on the chiller some even have a heating element so it will rheat or cool and maintain desired temp. depends on the model you get.
Addition: like i said i have a 36 gal reef tank with metal halides and i got a window AC unit in my apt for the tank and myself. i just keep a fan on the ballast and the room nice and cool and my tank stays at 78at night and 80 in the day at most. so for those small tanks a chiller is overkill in my opinion. why not spend the same or less on the AC unit and not only do you benefit but so does the tank.
