Why aren't reptile heat mats not recommended in the enclosure?
I am getting a heat mat for a snake which will be kept in a tub until the snake is large enough to go into large tank what are some ideas as the flat storage container has raised bottom? will felt work over the mat to prevent burning the snake if mat is kept inside?
No, felt will not be enough to keep the temperature from spiking and burning the snake.
Most reptiles have excellent heat detection through their upper cells, such as on their backs and heads, but very poor heat detection through their stomachs. This causes many snakes and lizards to get burned by tank heaters and pads that they lay on because they seem to be unable to know that they are being injured.
Depending on your snake, container type, and heat pad type, you have several options. If your heater is a Zoo Med so it is flexible and sticky on one side, I would fold it under one edge of the container so that 1/2 is beneath and 1/2 is stick to the side.
You could get a thick piece of plastic, such as PVC sheeting, 1/4in Plexiglass, or a thicker piece of carpet to place over top of the heater in the tank. Problems with carpet though is that it will mold if the humidity gets to it, so you might want to have some spare pieces on hand to change out once and a while. I have also heard of 1/4 to 1/2 inch particle board or cork board to work well, but I have not used it myself. I would recommend the cork though, if you do try this.
