what is the correct way to meg a 3 phase motor to test insulation?
What should the resistance be phase to phase? Phase to ground? Can it be done from the bucket, or do you have to do it at the motor? Any other readings that need to be taken to find out if the insulation is deteriorated?
To megger test a 3-phase motor with a 1000volt megger tester:
Switch off the circuit breaker.
Connect one megger test probe to ground.
Check for ground continuity, a terminal box bolt.
With one probe still connected to ground, connect the other test probe to a motor terminal. Hand crank for a minute. Insulation resistance should indicate 1 meg-ohm or more. If the insulation resistance is below 0.5 meg-ohm,install heaters on the motor casing and dry the motor for 5 hours or more and recheck its insulation resistance.
For an insulation resistance between phases. disconnect all line connections to its line terminals and the wye point if the motor is wye connected.Connect probes 1 and 2 in the two line terminals and hand crank the megger tester. Isulation resistance should be above 1 meg-ohms to show that the motor windings are short-circuited between phases.
