ac dc scales maximum and minimum?
If you measured a sinusoidal waveform on both the AC and DC scales with the same multimeter, and measured 1.5 volts AC scale and 1.0 volts DC scale, what would be the maximum and minimum of the waveform displayed on the oscilloscope?
There are various multimeters. The various electronic ones may behave differently when you feed it an AC waveform when it's set for DC. Let's assume this multimeter is an old-fashioned one with a needle that swings right for positive and left for negative. (That's called an analog meter.) If this sinusoidal waveform has a very low frequency (like 0.5 Hz) , perhaps your multimeter, when set for DC measurements, the needle would swing from +1.0 V DC, to - 1.0 V DC, back to + 1.0 VDC ... and various numbers in between. An oscilloscope would show those same max and min values, and what's happening in between.
But if your frequency is higher (and nearly all usefull AC waveforms are at higher freqs), when on the DC scale the meter would give you a reading of zero. The multimeter just can't keep up when the instantaneous value is changing fast. But an oscilloscope can keep up. So the scope would show max and min of +1.0 V DC and - 1.0 V DC.
If you put a pen on the end of the analog meter's needle, and ran a paper ribbon past it, you could get a trace that shows how it varies with time. That's essentially what the scope does for you.
