What happens if i try to measure DC voltage but the current is AC or vice versa with a multimeter?
I need to measure the voltages in a circuit but am not sure if one part is AC or DC. I fried something once by accidentally measuring DC amps but the current was AC.
A multimeter can measure Amps or Volts (and usually resistance). Be very careful using it to measure amps, because the meter becomes basically a short-circuit. In order to measure amps you need to break some connection in the circuit, and put the meter in series. My guess is that you measured across something, with the meter set to amps, which is a good way to fry things.
(This is why practically every meter I've seen always has the fuse blown on the current scale!)
If you are measuring an AC voltage with the meter set to read DC Volts, you will read very close to 0. If you are measuring a DC voltage with the meter set to AC, you will read something that's usually pretty close to the correct value (depends on the meter as to how accurate)
