Can I move to a poorer country and set myself up in a higher standard of living?
Seems odd... (Standard D-bag, middle class American here 
Is the some reason I shouldn't save up some money, move to Africa or something, buy a bodyguard (/s) and use my engineering to better everyone's lives once there?
(For example I can repurpose a dryer motor into a windmill, if I brought a CnC machine I could make weapons or tools?)
What's the downside I'm missing? other than the lower standard of living?
You are obviously too late to be doubt about moving out to poorer countries to increase your living standard. It's a real gain from exchange rate. Many retired prople in America, Europe and Japan are doing this. From the best of all, they get married to the local people and start the new life. Most of the poorer countries have also created programs, including visa regulation, accomodation and healthcare only for you guys. You will be the king and queen over there.
