how do i build a fixed output psu? using voltage regulator, resistors, capacitors etc.?
I have to build a fixed output power supply which will give a 5V constant voltage, any ideas? i'm getting very confussed!! Not to sure how to pick the right components. Any help would be great!!
A lot depends on how much current you want, and on how accurate the voltage has to be.
If you need less than a one amp, and a voltage of 4.8 to 5.2 is good enough, then you can use a LM7805 regulator with a good heat sink. Download the data sheet for schematics.
You will need a unregulated DC supply to drive the IC, and it will need to be able to supply at least 7 volts at 1 amp, but not more than 10 volts.
The unregulated supply can be a transformer with a 6 volt 2 amp secondary, a 1 amp bridge rectifier, and a large 10 volt capacitor. But a 7 volt secondary would be better/
If you need a more accurate 5 volts, substitute a LM338 regulator. You can adjust the voltage via two resistors.
