I need a list of possible elements for magic?
I'm writing a story in which every character has power with a different element. So, I'd like a list of as many such elements as possible - from anything as broad as air/earth/water/fire to as restricted as... I dunno, slugs. Point is, please, give me anything and everything you can think of!
A long time ago I used to play a game called Mage: The Ascention, in which magic was broken down into nine spheres. The nine spheres from that game sound like they would fit quite well with your story.
Correspondence: Able to manipulate distance and volume, such as using their closet door to travel to China or making a backpack with the storage capacity of a warehouse.
Entropy: Manipulation of chaos and destruction, such as decay, patterns of various kinds, and probability (read: altering your luck).
Forces: Manipulation of the various forces of the universe. Thermal, electrical, gravitational, magnetic, kinetic, etc.
Life: Control over biology, whether it's healing, inducing illnesses, altering the properties of a life form (giving a man a third arm, for instance), or even creating new life forms.
Matter: Manipulation of inorganic matter, such as transmuting lead into gold.
Mind: Magic that affects the mind without affecting the physical brain. Such as increasing or reducing intelligence, granting the person the ability to think multiple things at once, etc. (Try typing a report with your left hand, chatting in a chat room with your right, and talking on the phone with a third person. Ain't easy.)
Prime: Manipulation of the raw essence of magic itself. In an air/earth/fire/water scenario, Prime would be a "fifth element". It is the energy that powers everything.
Spirit: The ability to interact with, control, and conjure beings from the spirit world. Souls of the dead, spirits that never had a mortal existence, etc.
Time: The ability to manipulate the flow of time. Slowing it down, traveling through it, or even sidestepping time and experiencing a completely frozen world.
A 10th sphere was added during the last stages of this game, in the last few books before the series was voluntarily discontinued. The tenth sphere was meant to symbolize the end times.
Telos: Judgement and unity. This involves understanding the truth behind all things, knowing how they fit in with the rest of the world, what their purpose is, and what will become of them. Manipulation of Telos, such as deciding that an object has no purpose, can cause it to become erased from reality as if it never existed.
With these spheres of magic, mages often had to learn multiple spheres in order to work more effective spells. For instance, mastering "Life" might allow you to alter existing creatures. But to actually create a human being through magic alone, you would need Life, Matter (to create the body), Prime (to fuel the whole process), Spirit (to call an unborn spirit to inhabit the body), and Mind (to create a sentient, thinking being). A mage with Time and Correspondence could travel instantaneously to any point in time and space. A mage with Entropy and Life would be the master of life and death, ressurecting and slaying at will. A mage with Forces and Matter would be a terrifying foe, able to hurl flaming boulders or balls of solid energy at will.
Use your imagination.
EDIT: Forgot a key point there. In Mage: The Ascention, mages had to be extremely careful about the magic they used in the presence of normal humans. In that game, "reality" was formed from the collective agreement on what is real by all of humanity. Mages possessed a more powerful will than normal humans, and could in essence reshape reality as they saw fit--that's how they worked their magic. They simply willed reality to change. However such a change was temporary, and not unlike pulling a rubber band, reality would inevitably snap back into place. Thus, the more profound the change, the harder the backlash, and the more likely that the backlash would be fatal. Thus, mages had to be careful to disguise their magic in public so it seemed plausible, in line with accepted normal reality, and not triggering backlash. (For instance, instead of conjuring a $100 bill in their hands, they conjure it in their pocket then pull it out. Bills don't magically appear in people's hands, but pulling one out of your pocket is quite normal.) Away from the public eye they had more freedom in spellcasting, and on their home turf they were completely unrestricted.
